Traditional Chinese medicine has been in existence for at least 2,000 years and is a radically different system from the Western allopathic medicine with which most of us grew up.
Two forces influence chi: yin and yang. Yin is characterized by such qualities as coldness, weakness, hollowness, and darkness. Yang, embodying the opposite of yin, represents heat, strength, solidity, and light. Beyond the focus on yin and yang, there are several different schools of thought within TCM. One perspective focuses on the body’s internal organs. Each internal organ is related to a particular emotion. The heart is associated with joy, the spleen with anxiety, the lungs with grief, the liver with anger and frustration, and the kidneys with fear or paranoia. Another approach focuses on the five elements: The body is made up of wind, water, earth, fire, and metal, all of which must be in proper balance. The season, weather, diet, and emotions affect the balance of the elements. Finally, another widely used system involves causes of disease that are divided into external and internal causes. External causes include wind, cold, summer heat, damp, dryness, and fire heat. Mental pathogens (internal causes) include overjoy, anger, anxiety, overthinking, grief, fear, and fright. Diseases can be differentiated from one another according to eight principles: exterior/interior, hot/cold, deficiency/excess, and yin/yang. What results from this conceptualization is a dynamic, interconnected system of diagnosis and ongoing evaluation.
